Setting new design standards for the legal sector
Setting a new standard for the world’s largest law firm was the task at hand, swapping traditional interior design tropes typically found in the legal sector for a fresh perspective.
This included a contemporary approach to furnishing a commercial workspace in the legal sector. Natural tones with pops of rich earthy colours pay homage to the Highlands, while geometric lines mirror the form of Edinburgh’s built environment.
We echoed this approach through the furniture portfolio, fulfilling a specification that used tones, shapes and textures to change the narrative of corporate legal workspace design.
Penketh Group’s team had previously helped transform a coworking space in another part of Dentons’ property portfolio in Glasgow. This helped enable us to maintain product consistency across both sites through furniture and decorative lighting.
The Brief: sustainability meets Scottish Highlands
Dentons’ Edinburgh office is situated in the heart of the city in its newest mixed-use development. Housing a large number of the global law firm’s workforce, the space is sizeable but sustainability still underpinned every decision of the design process.
Penketh Group’s team won the tender process for furniture partner, providing an “insightful presentation” on how to meet the brief’s strict prerequisite to be BREEAM Excellent rated. The project achieved the rating following inspection and accreditation by an official BREEAM body.
We presented ‘kin with a document detailing where we would source each project in the furniture portfolio from and how far it would travel in terms of air miles, keeping carbon footprint as low as possible.
A strong emphasis was placed on local manufacturers, a carefully monitored supply chain and craftspeople close to home, as well as sustainable fabrics and materials.
A Mixology North23: Project of the Year winner
As well as a spotlight in Dezeen, the sustainability-first project, which sought to break through the barriers of conventional design, also won a Mixology North23: Project of the Year accolade.
The space was dubbed ‘next-gen law’ by Mixology, championed and awarded for how it eschewed “established design tropes and stigma set by traditional law firms for a modern, intuitive and elegant experience”.
We were delighted to be a part of the project’s future-facing initiatives and proud to support ‘kin and the rest of the project team in what is now a benchmark for similar commercial design schemes of the future.
