Heritage and hospitality fit out for The Main Rum Company

The Main Rum Company recently approached Penketh Group’s team as they were looking to transform one of their interior settings into a contemporary entertainment space with a traditional edge. This new space needed to compliment the brand itself, the location and the heritage of the building so we deployed our design, fit out and furniture teams to address the brief.

“Bringing our vision for this space to life wouldn't have been possible without Penketh Group. They provided excellent service every step of the way, creating bespoke design elements such as our rum barrel bar that really makes the space truly unique. They were able to recommend furniture of high quality to match our budget. The team also took the time to make sure the furniture and interior design used for this project remained true to the original features and history of the building. A pleasure to work with from beginning to end. ”

Ian Hoyles, The Main Rum Company Limited

The Main Rum Company is a Liverpool-based business that specialises in the importation, blending and sale of sugarcane distillates and premium aged rums. They’re based in a beautiful office on the city’s iconic waterfront, steeped in history and boasting a whole host of original architectural features.

In terms of the look and feel of the entertainment space, our design team were keen to be as sympathetic to the surroundings and their history as possible. Main Rum is situated on Tower Street – a significant part of Liverpool’s industrial and maritime stories. For this reason, we accentuated the existing exposed steelworks on the ceiling and brick walls, making them a key part of the overall design.

An industrial look & feel

We continued the industrial aesthetic through the colour palettes, fabrics and finishes we chose when refining fit out elements and selecting furniture pieces. We included a traditional green Chesterfield sofa, rich brown leathers, raw steel, black pendant lighting, antique bronze mirror, rust-effect table top and deep wood tones to compliment the Main Rum brand identity and original architecture.

The project also included a number of bespoke elements, such as a feature bar made from empty rum barrels. Not only did this inject Main Rum’s personality into the space, but it also provided a far more sustainable way to create a brand-new bar for the client. We also created a bespoke wall ladder designed for browsing the rum jar shelves and leaning into that traditional, vintage look and feel.

The entertainment space is also equipped with an integrated screen to make functionality as versatile and flexible as possible.
