National Stationery Week 2019: handwriting still matters

It’s a time for new notebook geeks, magazine page-sniffers and pen hoarders to come together and enjoy the simple little pleasures that stationery can bring.

Each year, the 7-day celebration of stationery adopts a brand-new theme and this year’s installment poses the question:

Does handwriting still matter in the digital age?

Different want to relax in the workspace and how to facilitate rejuvenation through office design and commercial furniture

Many conversations around this topic focus on school literacy curriculum and the underdevelopment of coordination and fine motor skills in children who are increasingly reliant on technology over traditional writing.

A recent article from the Guardian highlighted that even letters to Santa are now being sent via email. While this is certainly a growing concern, we want to spin this year’s theme in a slightly different way and explore why handwriting still has a place in the modern workplace.

Handwriting versus typing in the office

A survey by UK mailing service, Docmail revealed that 1 in 3 UK people haven’t written anything in the last 6 months and have not put pen to paper for over 40 days.

For many workers, this may be completely down to preference and increased access to technology and information-sharing devices. For others, it may very well be down to a lack of provision for analogue learning and creativity as well as digital.

As workplace experts, we want to ensure that UK workers have sufficient access to traditional means of writing, note-taking and brainstorming in order to benefit from the following advantages:

  • Improved posture and reduced risk of issues like ‘tech neck’
  • Better memory recall and absorption of information
  • More attentive processing and summarising of information when note-taking
  • More free-form notes and idea-sharing, as opposed to linear nature of typing
  • Improved critical thinking and engagement
